In this episode of Creativity and Compliance, Ronnie & Tom visit with Sven Peterson, VP of Compliance, Ethics & Regulatory Services at Premera Blue Cross to discuss their character, Captain Compliance, and how they use it to improve compliance and speak up culture.
Sven discuss the creation of a character, “Captain Compliance,” an over-the-top superhero character that he plays in himself. He discusses the fact that its a little silly, but that’s almost the point.
“It gives us a way to address what can be some difficult subjects and it makes me and the program more memorable and approachable. Compliance can be scary. This makes it easier and more likely that my business colleagues will come talk to me and the team.”
Captain Compliance:
- Live appearances at meetings and employee events
- Animated scenarios for training and communications
- The Ethics League = Compliance Champions
- Professor Pitfall = nemesis (wrongway character)
Sven discuss the fact that this works in part because he’s already established himself as a respected authority figure and business partner and advisor. Because he already has high status, this serves as a nice counter-balance. He also spent time on the front end getting buy-in from other senior leaders.
The Result
- Increased awareness
- Increased speak up reporting
- Better qualitative scores on surveys
“Ethics & Compliance is a team sport. Creativity and humor are an important part of improving compliance and speak up culture. So be creative and try new things!”
