Reinventing Compliance: Improv, Humor & Approachability

Lauren Thal

In this episode of Creativity & Compliance, Tom & Ronnie visit with Lauren Thal, VP of Compliance at Tolmar, to discuss how they used improv training to build skills and creative video shorts to help transform the EC team to being more positive, welcoming and approachable.

Tolmar has been growing and the ethics, compliance and legal team was as well. As part of building out all the relevant functions, they recognized the need to establish a positive, supportive, welcoming brand.

Improv, Communication, Collaboration & Psychological Safety
The Tolmar Legal team had a legal retreat and included improv training!

“Our goal was to improve the teams ability to communicate and collaborate more effectively so that employees are more likely to proactively seek out our advice and support.”

  • It was a bonding experience and got us out of our comfort zone
  • It got us focusing on the importance of collaboration and supporting each other
  • It got us in the mindset of supporting our business colleagues in a more positive way
  • It made us acutely aware of different communication styles
  • We used role playing to practice things like: active listening, adjusting word choice, paying attention to body language
  •  It made us more flexible and adaptable
  • It was a lot of fun!

Training, Communications & Burst Learning
We started sprinkling in short, entertaining videos into our training and comms.

  • It helps us get attention
  • It’s unexpected and disarming
  • It promotes our team and makes us more approachable
  • We use them in a variety of ways
     -Regular communications
-As commercials at our National Sales Meeting
     -To kickoff live meetings
-Give to business leaders to deploy

“It’s all about putting ourselves in the mindset of “I’ve Got Your Back” with your colleagues and business partners.”
